JOB PURPOSE
- Develop engaging communications materials and identify innovative ways to actively involve Kenyans in WFP’s ‘changing lives to save lives’ agenda.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive, within delegated authority)
People Management:
- Manage an efficient communications team. Maintain regular in-person briefings with team members and identify efficient ways to share information within the team. Build the capacity of team members by developing work plans and monitoring performances against objectives.
- Actively participate in the country office leadership team.
External Communications:
- Develop and implement strategic communications products such as news releases, media messages, talking points, opinion pieces, human-interest stories, videos, still images and social media campaigns to support the CO Communications and Advocacy Strategy and fundraising initiatives.
- Expand WFP’s reach in Kenya by exploring new and innovative channels, such as English and Kiswahili radio and TV stations, to tell WFP’s ‘changing lives to save lives’ story in ways that resonate and engage with Kenyan audiences.
- Monitor all media and social media platforms to identify and manage reputational risk. Respond to questions from media and act as organizational spokesperson when required.
- Write and implement a social media strategy which uses compelling multimedia content to engage with stakeholders such as UN partners, donors, media, national and county governments, implementing partners, public audiences and the people we serve.
Internal Communications:
- Support the Country Director’s (CD) office by ensuing all communications and advocacy messaging is aligned. Provide visibility of the CD’s activities by creating and sharing a variety of multimedia content in a timely manner.
- Ensure that all country office personnel are familiar with the CO communications and advocacy strategy and how their work can contribute to its success.
- Build the capacity of country office management and programme teams in all aspects of communications by providing advice, guidance, and training to ensure consistent and high-quality communications products.
Community Engagement:
- Support WFP programme teams to effectively communicate with the people we serve by overseeing the production of a range of creative communications products such as radio broadcasts, audio recordings, animations, motion graphics, posters, signboards, and bulk SMS.
- Perform other duties as required.
STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- Five (5) years post graduate professional experience with Master’s degree in journalism, International Relations, Public Relations, Communications or other relevant field,
OR
- Seven (7) years of post-graduate relevant experience with a university degree in Journalism, International Relations, Public Relations, Communications or other relevant field.
- Progressive and relevant professional work experience in communications and advocacy preferably in the humanitarian or development sector.
- Proven experience in developing and implementing a range of creative communications products and implementing them in strategic ways.
- Has established working relationships with Kenyan journalists and media outlets.
- A strong communicator, able to present complex information in clear and engaging ways in both English and Kiswahili.
- Experienced in the design and management of social media content and social media campaigns.
- Has managed small teams of staff to deliver innovative communications products.
Language: International Professional: Fluency (level C) in English and Kiswahili languages.
DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE
- Experience working in both development and emergency contexts is an asset.
