The Job
As a Research Manager at Tiko, you’ll be at the forefront of implementing Pathways, an innovative segmentation approach. Based in Nairobi, this vital role combines research acumen with strategic innovation, focusing on identifying and supporting vulnerable populations through advanced qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Your work will not only be pivotal to enhancing Tiko’s internal programming but also contribute to global knowledge in public health strategies.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Applying Pathways segmentation methods to identify key population groups and understand their unique needs through both qualitative and quantitative analysis.
- Conducting sophisticated statistical analyses and supplementary research to deepen our understanding of different population segments.
- Assessing the effectiveness of existing and planned interventions in meeting the specific needs and desires of identified population segments.
- Leading and executing rapid qualitative research, including focus groups, interviews, and ethnography, to gather in-depth insights into target populations.
- Managing the prototyping phase, quickly iterating and refining innovative solutions based on research findings.
- Ensuring research activities are conducted with rigor, within budget, and delivered on time.
- Collaborating with the innovation team and Tiko staff to integrate research findings into our innovation processes seamlessly.
- Communicating research insights and findings effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Producing diverse publications, such as academic papers, case studies, blog posts, and project reports, to disseminate our findings and methodologies.
- Enhancing Tiko’s internal capabilities by training staff in the quantitative and qualitative methods integral to the Pathways approach.

You are a dynamic researcher with a passion for improving the lives of vulnerable adolescents and young people. Your innovative mindset, combined with your expertise in both quantitative and qualitative research, enables you to uncover impactful insights. Your leadership skills shine in mentoring and inspiring teams, and you have a knack for transforming data into solutions that drive real-world change.
Requirements:
- A Master’s degree (or higher) in Public Health, Social Work, Design, Behavioral Science, Medical Sociology, or a related field, with a preference for a Doctoral degree.
- At least 7 years of experience working in health or development programs, with a particular focus on vulnerable populations.
- Experienced in designing and executing qualitative research including developing instruments, conducting interviews, analysis
- Familiarity with quantitative research methods, including how to interpret and use findings. Ability to use statistical software for analysis.
- A ‘design mindset’ and experience with developing solutions to complex problems
- A track record of writing academic publications, showcasing your ability to communicate complex ideas effectively.
- Proven ability in leading teams to successfully deliver on complex projects.
- Experience in human-centered design and/or innovation is highly desirable.
- Lived experience reflecting the populations served by Tiko is an asset.
- Familiarity with using data for problem-solving in contexts like quality improvement.
- You are currently based in Nairobi, Kenya (mandatory).
