Responsibilities
- Advise the Commander and represent the organization on all gender and associated issues and activities.
- Develop a gender policy which articulates the organization’s commitments towards gender equality and provides a framework for institutionalizing gender, women, peace and security (WPS) into all organization’s activities and programmes.
- Work as part of an integrated team, collaborate with colleagues on common activities within the Human Security portfolio, and build cordial working relationships with external interlocutors, partners, UN/AU PSOs, and troop/ police contributing countries.
- Provide senior level technical expertise and leadership on gender and human security programming to relevant partners and mission components.
- Oversee implementation and monitoring of the organization’s gender policy towards full institutional mainstreaming of gender and the WPS agenda.
- Design, develop, administer and deliver gender and associated activity training materials for the organization and its partners across Sub-Saharan Africa, including within PSO missions.
- Adhere to the organization’s policy and programming whilst conducting the appropriate administrative action to ensure the smooth delivery of gender and associated courses.
- Routinely input into the organization’s report and returns process.
- Oversee and input to the monitoring and evaluation process.
- Ensure all gender and associated activity are captured within the organization’s communications policy and outputs.
- Contribute to the lessons learned and lessons Identified process for continuous improvement.
- Deliver internal gender training to the organization’s personnel to maintain organizational competencies.
- Line manages other members of the gender team.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in gender or in a related discipline.
- Experience as a gender officer, preferably working in a civ-mil-pol environment with mission experience with the UN/ AU and other international stakeholders.
- Working knowledge of UK gender policies, strategies and programmes including prevention of sexual violence initiative (PSVI), WPS and the international development (Gender Equality) Act 2014.
- Broad experience of developing and delivering training, including integrating gender into training and other activities across Africa.
- In-depth knowledge of gender issues including WPS, conflict related sexual violence, children and armed conflict and protection of civilians.
- Experience of working in Sub-Saharan Africa, including the Horn of Africa, preferably with African militaries.
- Strong communication skills and ability to present information clearly in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Experience of using monitoring and evaluation tools.
- Strong administrative skills and ability to prioritize and multitask.
- Flexibility. Significant regional and international travel is expected.
